close to call but hillary clinton has a slight lead. let's get more numbers from steve kornacki who is back at 30 rock. >> we're close to half of all of the precincts in across the state right now. you say a slight lead. you look at those numbers, basically a 200-county delegate advantage. there are over 12,000 county delegates up for grabs here. these are not just people checking off boxes. it's a democratic caucus, it's complicated. a little more than 12,000 up for grabs. she's up by 200 with nearly half the vote in. this county right here, clark county, las vegas, it was hillary clinton's best county eight years ago, it was why she was able to win the state eight years ago. right now it's why she was ahead. clark county, we're getting more significant numbers, 40% in in clark county. hillary clinton continuing to lead by 10 points, that's the same margin she had eight years ago, that's the margin she needs today, that's the margin she's getting. if it stays 55-45, sanders is not going to be able to make up that statewide gap we're showing. he's got to reverse this number in clark. t

, wolf. that is certainly no understatement. hillary clinton's communications director talking to reporters a short time ago and she said that they did better than they expected here in south carolina. she did noticeably strike a cautious tone. she said there's still a long way to go, there's still 46 states. she did say if african-american turnout for hillary clinton here in south carolina is indicative of what we will see in the southern states, they feel they're very well-positioned to pull ahead considerably from bernie sanders. now, privately, wolf, this is the more interesting part. sources with the campaign not so cautious. one of them, in fact, saying that they think that this race is going to be over mid march, march 15th. there's another series of contests on that day. that's just two weeks from wednesday. that tells you something. they have a lot of work to put in. but they think ultimately by mid march hillary clinton will have pulled far ahead of bernie sanders. almost 60% of the dell gegates l have been awarded. >>> jeff zeleny is over at bernie sanders headquarters

are gathering the attention. in his speech bernie sanders called it a virtual tie. hillary clinton used no such wording. and now late tonight, we have something of a protest from the sanders campaign. our correspondent traveling with the sanders campaign with us by telephone. explain what's going on? >> reporter: good evening. we just got off the bus. we're about to board the sanders charter to new hampshire, but there's some concern bubbling about 90 precincts the iowa democratic party did not staff 90 of these precincts. this is on background from campaign aides that they are being asked to help with the count. of course, it's not clear exactly what that means. the sanders campaign is not clear on what they're being expected to contribute, whether or not this count will be done fairly and of course with the margin what it is i think we might be able to show our viewers just how close the number of delegates that we're talking about here. these represent about 5% of the precincts still outstanding and that number has not moved over the course of the last hour or so. of course with the

hillary clinton if she wins or bernie sanders if he were to win in iowa. that would be significant. clearly an embarrassment for the democratic party right now. let's take a closer look at what has happened so far tonight in the iowa caucuses. first on the republican side, cnn projected a while ago ted cruz, the texas senator, he is the winner in the iowa republican caucuses with 28%. trump with 24%. marco rubio in a very impressive third place with 23%. ben carson with 9%. but cruz did win. he beat trump by 6,233 votes. a big win for ted cruz. he now goes on to the next contest. all of them go on to the next contest. clearly a disappointment for donald trump. he was hoping to win the most recent polls in iowa showed he would win. but he did not win tonight. impressive night, though, for marco rubio. on the democratic side, hillary clinton and bernie sanders about as close as you possibly can see with 98% of the vote now in. 49.8% for hillary clinton. bernie sanders 49.6%. martin o'malley, he's down. he's now suspended his campaign for all practical purposes he is now out. technica

think we saw in hillary clinton as she answered the question about how do you combine ego with humility, the ego it takes to run for president, and we sort of lifted the veil on hillary clinton a little bit where she said, i had a husband who was such a natural and by implication saying you know what, i have to work at this because i grew up with this guy who was so good at it and for me i never thought i would do this and i've had to learn. and it was a very telling moment for me to watch her. >> so in comparison to her husband, do you think she seems coached sometimes, that she seems too sort of put together? it seems she is better in these sorts of situations than she is on the campaign trail. >> she's not instinctual. i think the way that bill clinton could have an emotional connection with a voter and share a moment in a way that everybody else in the audience and everybody at home can relate to, she's just not as good at that. but here's the problem for her -- nobody's as good at that as bill clinton. >> it's a really tough bar, you are know. >> i mean, i'm a republican w

, well, it came up short in nevada over the weekend. and that puts hillary clinton in total control of the democratic race heading into south carolina this saturday. and all of those primaries on super tuesday on march 1st. and right now, we are barreling toward a general election matchup that would pit donald trump and hillary clinton clinton. let that sink in for just a minute. we'll get the early handicap on what that matchup would look like later in the show. but first, begin with the seemingly unstoppable force in the republican party. donald trump is on the precipice of amassing an overpowering coalition of voters and potentially delegates. this is what trump's opponents would call a nightmare scenario for the republican establishment. it's something far worse for them. right now, it is reality. trump has jumped out to the early lead in the delegate count. this after steam rolling the field in south carolina, winning every single congressional district and sweeping all 50 delegates that were up for grabs on saturday night. he steamrolled the field in new hampshire before that and
