i'm joined by cnn political commentators maria cardona and van jones. maria, a lot of people anticipated a bernie sanders win but this was a huge win that surprised so many people, is he now considered a very, very serious threat to hillary clinton's campaign? >> well, i think he's certainly considered a very serious contender during the primary and i think the clinton campaign is certainly looking at him as that. it was a terrific night for him. there's no question about that and it was a tough night for hillary clinton but let's keep this in perspective. it was the second contest when you get through with the first four states, you're only going to have been decided 4% of the delegates and so it's very, very early. going into south carolina and nevada and in the states for super tuesday, the terrain is more favorable for hillary clinton and that is what they'll be focusing on. having said that, it doesn't mean she doesn't have to learn lessons from what has happened thus far and she was very clear about that last night and there f there's anything we

cardona. maria, can you clear this up? it seems to be a matter of a lot of contention today. is secretary clinton, a moderate as she once said, or a progressive, as she also says. >> she's absolutely a progressive. it's kind of laughable to those of us who endured what she went through in the 1990s. i worked a to the dnc under ron brown when the right-wing organizations were relentless in attacking her as a radical lefty liberal communist woman who was going to take over our country and completely ruin it. so let's remember, in the 1970s, jimmy carter appointed her to an organization called the legal services corporation. this entity worked for the rights of cocktail waitresses who were complaining their outfits were too skimpy, who worked for the rights of trans males who were looking for help from welfare agencies for gender operations, who worked for indian tribes and suing maine and new york to give back some of the land, and who did some of the earliest work on reproductive health for wom

for more, let's bring in cnn political commentator and democratic strategist, maria cardona and political strategist jonathan at this seeni, author of "the essential: bernie sanders and his vision for america." he supports bernie sanders. jonathan, what's at stake in the debate tonight? >> well, i think every time i'm asked that, i say the same thing. for bernie, it's pretty straight forward. he wants to be known to more americans across the country. he doesn't have to look around for slogans or figure out what the next poll-tested slogan should be. he's very straight forward in terms of the principle he's held for 30, 40 years and wants to explain how he wants to change the rigged economy and corruption in washington. >> hillary clinton has to come back from the stunning defeat in new hampshire. what does she need to do tonight? >> i think she needs to focus on her message of actually trying to get things done. this is one thing that senator sanders has not been able to answer in any of the debates or any of the interviews he's done, which is everything that he's talking about sounds gre
