i'm chris matthews in washington. it didn't take long for the political battle to start over filling justice scalia's seat. what is less than zero? the chances of obama successfully appointing a supreme court justice to replace scalia, within minutes of the justice's death. mitch mcconnell said in part, the american people should have a voice in the selection of their next supreme court justice. therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president. senator chuck grassley, the chair of the judiciary committee said given the huge divide in the country and this president above all others to use the court to circumvent congress, it only makes sense that we defer to the american people who will elect a new president to select the next supreme court justice. and senator ted cruz told chuck todd on "meet the press" he would stop any nominee at all from even being considered. >> doesn't the united states have an obligation to at least go through the process and have an up or down vote? >> not remotely. p

when you cut taxes by $5 billion and you grow over 400,000 jobs, that is a record that i can take to washington. >> if you add it up, kasich, bush, christie, put carly fiorina in there, even though she's an outside establishment voters, and marco rubio, donald trump would be in the rear-view mirror. but you have this cluster. >> and for kasich, the question is -- he may do well here, but where is he going to do well afterwards? it's hard to see him doing well in south carolina or the super tuesday states. and he does not have the kind of organization that he's built that could actually compete for a national campaign. that is the one thing that jeb does have going for him, while he has burned through a lot of money -- >> it's why ted cruz's campaign is quietly cheering for jeb bush. the ultimate representative of the establishment. but cruz's folks are cheering for jeb here in new hampshire because they want jeb, and more importantly, they want jeb's super pac to keep going to south carolina and keeping its fire on marco. >> we know there are a lot of evangelical tea party members in the south.

he has been covering washington for more than 40 years. he also moderated three presidential election debates and now a cbs news contributor. before we talk about the presidential race, let me ask you about the stunning and tragic news about justice scalia. i think it's known for you in washington sometimes you see the justices even though there's a vail of secrecy over the court. did you ever interact with him and what are your experiences with him? >> i met him once at a party. that's the extent of my personal contact. he was truly an intellectual giant. no getting around that. one could disagree or agree with him. he made his mark but i got to tell you, brian. i woke up this morning and looked at my iphone and there was the headline on the washington post story that says scalia's death spurs partisan sclash. i thought my god they haven't dug the poor man's grave yet and we're talking about a partisan brought on by his death. it's where we are in american politics today. >> we can talk about whether it's good or bad but it's certainly ch

let's go back to wolf in washington. >> our political directors, you are looking at all the numbers. who showed up and what they won. >> he asked the voters as they showed up, what are you looking for in a candidate quality. this will help explain to everyone watching why ted cruz is where he is. take a look at this. among the voters that said i am looking for a candidate who shares my values, ted cruz is demolishing the field. 37% for cruz and 21% for rubio and 16% for carson and 7% for paul. that is 41% of the republican electorate. that was an important quality. when we asked about the quality of someone who can win, the electability question. rubio and 25% for trump and 22% for cruz and 2% for carly fiorina. not as many caucus goers looking for electability as for someone who shares their values. this quality, telling it like it is, that is the donald trump thing. that is what he is campaigning on. 67% of voters looking for a candidate who said i want someone who tells it like it is. only 15% of the republican caucus going electorate is looking for that quality. with four oust te
