let's wrap up the week and talk about the big day ahead in south carolina with kevin robillard there in washington. good morning to you. let's get started with the day after here, we're talking about swirling politics with religion, trump versus the pope and even this cover from "the new york daily news." kind of pretty much says it all. how does this play into the bulletproofness and the unsinkableness of trump, there the daily news calls him the antichrist. >> trump has taken on everyone during this campaign. the pope gets added to the list of targets here. the one thing that trump could say in this case the pope kind of started it in this fight. but, you know, particularly in south carolina, which is coming up, this isn't going to hurt him. even, you know, a huge percentage of voters in south carolina are evangelicals. evangelicals tend to view catholicism in general with a lot of skepticism. so the fact he's in a fight with the pope isn't going to hurt him there. could it hurt him, you know, in states with larger catholic populations as things go down the line say louisiana or a lot of states

i've been ose fights in in in washington. and we're in the foxhole we're fighting president obama and his policies and fighting pelosi and harry reid, sometimes we were fighting and rs of our own party leadership to do what's right for you. in that foxhole, you in around and see who is there with you. i can tell you there was one side that he senate was in every single fight with that was ted cruz. give my endorsement easy. from north rk carolina. i endorsed mark meadows for congress. endorsed ted cruz for president of the united states. thehen i was courted by all candidates in this race, i boxes.d checking the some of the candidates checked a lot of the boxes. they believe in jesus christ as savior, check. they believe in life and the sanctity of life from the minute conception forward, check. they believe in the constitution powers, check. of but ted cruz checks everyone of some with a then stood in bold because he up for life and said we should defund planned parent and shut down using the article one powers that we have

and nbc's edward lawrence joins us from washington with more. good morning, edward. >> reporter: good morning, shannon. it seems like the heat has been turned up a notch. both sides republicans and democratic candidates are fighting to make new hampshire count. new hampshire's one of the smallest states in the nation. this week it's the center of national politics. >> i'm pretty excited about where we are. because i believe that people in new hampshire are going to make the right decision. >> reporter: republicans see a crack in donald trump's armor. he finished second in iowa to senator ted cruz. >> we are going to beat hillary clinton and it won't be by a flip of the coin. >> reporter: marco rubio surprised everyone, almost beating trump, finishing a close third. >> we've got the biggest vote ever in the history of a primary in iowa by like 60,000 people came out extra. i'm not going to say it was me, but believe me it was me. >> reporter: trump say he'll win new hampshire. they credit cruz's incredible ground game for the win in iowa. >> we'l

he has defined what he thinks is the wrong approach by washington and then he's offered what he believes is a rather simple remedies. that is something that's really resonating right now. >> but a lot of people in the beginning didn't believe that he could do it. >> that all of these people misjudged the pundits pm they misjudged the anger of the american people. >> they really shouldn't have because the three people who are the frontrunners right now, marco rubio in 2010, ted cruz in 2012 and donald trump in 2015. what do they have in common? they're the outsiders. and they have close to 60 and 70% in some places. and marco rubio now wears the establishment proudly. and the idea you can beat trump from the left, senator rubio himself was asked tell us which state you'll win and he said i'll win florida on march 15th. ladies and gentlemen, by march 15th, 50% of the delegates will have voted. he's skipping the first four contests 0-4, he's not going to win anything on super tuesday, according to mr. rub io himself and he may win florida. i think cruz has a much better chance of winning te

that's something you don't get enough of in washington, d.c. and i think of all the things that were said

we have put washington on the run. and tonight's outcome is a victory for we the people. >> an adviser to cruz tweeting this photo of him calling donald trump last night to congratulate him on his victory. at the same time, cruz's campaign also rolled out this new video targeting trump. >> look, i got the trump action figure. >> no, way, it's huge. >> what does he do? >> he pretends to be a republican. i don't live in washington d.c. i live in wisconsin so i'm very close to i think what the average, every day republican primary voter looks like and thinks about and i think that there was never an appetite for jeb bush from the beginning. it was -- the idea was that, you know, it sounded good on paper and looked good in a big play book that they put together and they thought they could just really raise a lot of money and create an appetite for it. i think the good news for america sadly for jeb bush is that this proves that money does not buy elections. he had more money than god and he could not convince more than 6% of whatever primary he was in to vote for him. so i think in a sense we can all be happy that elections cannot be bought in the united states. they're really the voice of the people that have to be listened to and i would say from the beginning that there never was on the ground in the base in the grass roots an appetite for a jeb bush campaign. >> we have to leave it right there. thanks so much to b

i know a lot of politicians in washington. good guys and bad guys. i know liars in washington. but i will tell you, i know ted cruz. he is not a liar. his honesty is impeccable. his integrity is unshakable. and the last thing, you cannot beat a democrat with a democrat. if you think you are going to beat hillary clinton with somebody else who is for amnesty , because while ted cruz was saying we've got to build a wall, while ted cruz was saying you are not doing the gang of eight bill, donald trump was meeting with dreamers. donald trump was telling mitt romney he is too tough on mexico. he is saying these things now to get elected. but between planned parenthood and all the other things he's said he's going to do, you cannot beat a democrat with a democrat. he will lose in the general. for the first time since 1920, we have a true constitutionalist, somebody who will stand on that constitution, for the first time since 1920. if we don't forget our principles, if we as conservatives all across america realize this guy means what he says and says what he means, this guy is quite

with a funeral held on saturday in washington. scalia's courtroom chair was draped in black yesterday in me more yum. the partisan battle over replacing him continues to up fold. during an iowa radio interview, senate judiciary committee chairman chuck grassley who's in charge of the confirmation hearings said i would wait until the nominee is made before i make decisions. but grassley said he's not open to a confirmation hearing. yesterday, president obama challenged senate republicans to rise above day to day politics. >> this will be the opportunity for senators to do their job. your job doesn't stop until you're voted out or until your term expires. i intend to do my job between now and january 20th of 2017. i expect them to do their job as well. >> and nbc's tracie potts is in washington and tracie, now we have president obama taking direct aim at the republicans. >> reporter: exactly. you know, sometimes we forget that he taught constitutional law. his argument here that this is not a partisan issue, democrats and republican

[applause] [cheering] ♪ ♪ will >> from washington journal, this is 10 minutes. this. before getting more calls, derek fumbledk -- wallbank lirc -- from bloomberg joins us about these numbers. is this a three man race as marco rubio says? caller: senator rubio has a vested interest in this three-man race. a large bulwark of his campaign strategy has been to consolidate what you would call an establishment lane. making sure all the republican comes behind him and that is not just people, that is money as well. his campaign fund-raising has not been phenomenal recently. there is indications right now as jeb bush dropped out that some of his top finance people are giving marco rubio a serious look. we are going to watch in the coming days to see if there is a --exxit is -- exit is udus. that is what they are hoping for after a second-place finish in south carolina. host: don't these donors ask when these candidates come to them ok, which state are you going to win? caller: it has to be the question. host: what is the answer? posing -- i have been asking this since august.

and in a town like washington, d.c. that's become increasingly partisan he's a man that's always had deep and enduring friendships on both sides of the political aisle. he can see the good and the valuable and the funny and the fun and the interesting in everyone. and you know, he was -- he had a tremendous wit. just a tremendous wit. >> tremendous wit. memories from paul cappuccio, a former clerk and very good friend of justice scalia. our thanks to him. later this week cnn will host two republican presidential town hall events in south carolina ahead of the primary there. all six republican candidates will participate. marco rubio, ted cruz, ben carson will appear on wednesday night. donald trump, jeb bush, john kasich will appear thursday night. both town halls hosted by our very own anderson cooper. they both begin at 8:00 p.m. eastern time. the town halls will give south carolina voters the opportunity to question directly the candidates and of course the passing of supreme court justice scalia will be addressed as

it's liberal. 43% of iowa democrats told the washington post they are socialists. god bless them. i'm happy to hear it. it wasn't a must win state. i think he did well enough with an almost win to get a little bit of momentum going. it's not the same as if he had won. it's all we would be talking about if she lost and he won is when does she drop out. we would. we heard a bit of that last night. how quickly does she have to drop out if she loses iowa. it's a tough state. she came in third in 2008. it's not just little league or t ball to say you did really well. she does get the trophy going forward. she did win. she also won -- i watched a little caucus in waterloo which is the most diverse city in iowa where john louis visited the other night. she took those ten delegates, waterloo, iowa looks more like the rest of the country than the rest of iowa does. she really does have a lot of advantages going forward. bernie is changing the narrative. i think he did himself a lot of good there. >> ben, charlie just referenced ethanol. to me, if there was was one unambiguous winner was te
