back in washington, robert costa joins us, msnbc analyst as well. the republican party's reacting now to the news of trump's dominance in different ways. for some they are pushing resistance. henry barber, the nephew of hallie barber, a member of the republican national committee said, after trump has won in new hampshire and south carolina, republicans are crazy and are about to blow the white house if we don't rally to stop him, close quote. marco rubio made the case for why the party needed to nominate him. >> we can't win. if we nominate someone, if we nominate someone that half of the republican party hates, we're going to be fighting against each other all the way to november. we will never win that way. i don't care how much you may think they're funny or how interesting they may sound. if we nominate someone that 40% to 50% of our party can't stand, we are going to lose. >> katy, i don't know what all these guys are thinking, but he sounded desperate. we've got a leak in the dike, we've got to stop this thing. >> which is the case right now.

as the washington examiner points out 1.2 million people voted in republican primaries and caucuses so far. that's up 24% from 2012. these contrasting trends in voter turn out between democrats and republicans should not concern bernie sanders but could be a warning to the entire democratic party. are democrats suffering from enthusiasm gap and will that haunt them in november. joy, there's a bunch of ways you can read this data. what is your read of this so far? >> there's a couple ways to read it. one way is the shadow reelect phenomenon where democrats already have the white house. they are not motivated to take back the white house. they believe a lot of democratic voters assume hillary clinton will be the nominee, don't feel any urgency to go out and do anything about this. they may come back in the fall. the danger for bernie sanders is in that presumption is whether he has an actual chance of being the nominee meaning there's less nomination thinking he isn't going to win any way. the people northeast motivated to make a change are a small minority of the democrat party who want

maybe vermont, california, oregon, washington state. not too many. >> he gets the left coast but not the east coast. >> i don't think he gets the east coast. he doesn't get ohio or pennsylvania. i'm not sure if he gets new york or new jersey. >> a man without a party. he's not part of the establishment. if he wins tonight, will be republican establishment come to grips with him and say we got to live with this guy? >> if he wins tonight, it's very difficult to see the scenario where he loses. what state does donald trump lose next? he wins tonight, he has a commanding lead in the state of new hampshire. he's a commanding lead in nevada. he has a commanding lead in south carolina. setting himself up to the winner take all states come super tuesday and after. i think the republican leaders look at the potential of a cruz nomination. look at ted cruz and they see somebody who gets 140 electoral votes. leads to a loss of senate and a loss of house. they look at donald trump and see someone with the potential to expand the pool to be able to

it was disappointing to republicans in washington. i spoke to two senior republican official who hoped that new hampshire would almost narrow the republican field and a party would able to quickly coalesce behind an alternative to donald trump and that alternative being marco rubio. we saw a wave of support come his way after iowa. but what the real fear is now in republican circles is this fight for are the establishment lane, the fight to be the donald trump alternative is going to last weeks and weeks and weeks. what did this mean for the bush and rubio campaigns going forward? they don't believe -- neither of them believe that john kasich present as serious threat in south carolina given that the electorate there is much more conservative than john kasich, who ran as a much more moderate candidate. both of them see each other as their biggest threat going forward. expect the race between bush and rubio to get much more intense in the come beiing weeks and wh that does for the fight against donald trump really throws that in disarr

"the washington post" saying she cruised to victory over bernie sanders. this is, in many ways, the speech she's been raring to give as she accepted -- claimed victory in iowa before it was certain. went on to defeat in new hampshire. the campaign trail has not been what the clinton campaign anticipated or expected as recently as six months ago. but tonight, to great excitement and a great introduction by congressman clyburn, she came out and was eventually able to do somewhat is very, very difficult with an election night. big crowds, she brought them to silence. you could hear a pin drop. she brought the throttle all the way back and feathered the prop and she was talking about the black lives matter movement. so big night for her tonight. and our director of elections has passed on word to us that this margin of victory could be truly sweeping and could be north of 40 points when all the votes are counted. we've got 20% in, rachel, and this is a big victory. >> this is only one in five votes count sod far. only 20% in, so there's no reason to extrapolat
