it was disappointing to republicans in washington. i spoke to two senior republican official who hoped that new hampshire would almost narrow the republican field and a party would able to quickly coalesce behind an alternative to donald trump and that alternative being marco rubio. we saw a wave of support come his way after iowa. but what the real fear is now in republican circles is this fight for are the establishment lane, the fight to be the donald trump alternative is going to last weeks and weeks and weeks. what did this mean for the bush and rubio campaigns going forward? they don't believe -- neither of them believe that john kasich present as serious threat in south carolina given that the electorate there is much more conservative than john kasich, who ran as a much more moderate candidate. both of them see each other as their biggest threat going forward. expect the race between bush and rubio to get much more intense in the come beiing weeks and wh that does for the fight against donald trump really throws that in disarr

>> voters won't change in washington. they know this is the election between those power brokers in washington who want to maintain the status quo and all of those americans who believe the government should work for the people rather than the other way around. that's the competition you're seeing. people are tired of political correctness and those really focused on favoritism for a few here in washington rather than opportunity for all. >> well, you want change in washington to be clear, to be sure, and the question is, who is most likely to get that change? it's the issue of, you know, electability versus purity, really. when voters in iowa were asked about who the most electable was, it was marco rubio at 43%, donald trump at 25%, cruz 22. you have a record and heritage has a record of being on the side of purity sometimes instead of electability. what do you think in this case? >> well, there's really no purity in politics. what we want to do is move things in a positive direction. americans know we haven't been doin

you never heard me be critical of washington d.c. you never heard anybody say the dog ate my homework in florida. if anybody on my team started saying it wasn't my fault, i politely sent them over into the corner and said either stop or you're going to be fired. because the first day in office as president of the united states, here's my pledge to you. unlike my sprepredecessor who w always critical of his predecessor. i will accept personal responsibility as president of the united states, and my team will do the same, and we'll begin to solve problems rather than blaming others that they're not getting solved. >> there's jeb bush. he also said about donald trump, you can't learn something if all you do is talk. it's interesting to hear from jeb bush. he says he's not going to blame other people when he gets into office. it's his office. he's going to take it. you hear donald trump blaming a lo lot of people. that's his angle. at one point he even blamed iowans because he wasn't even leading. >> i was there, and i heard the speech.

for the second time in a month the president highlighted that he thinks he failed to unite washington. does this surprise you? >> no, it doesn't. i mean, what we're seeing is a very humble president who recognizes that at seven years into his term there are still some things that he wished he could have gotten. it's the epitome of the american dream. he wanted the language to be less visceral, the rancor to be toned down. and what he sees now is a bernie sanders campaign and a donald trump campaign which have tapped into an anxious, which have tapped into a worry. and all of you us, even myself included, sometimes i have to take a step back and realize my language in this political discourse is not what it should be. and i'm not absolutely certain how we got there. >> how so? >> but i know this is something that weighs on barack obama's heart. >> you think sometimes you say things you shouldn't say or too inflammatory? >> i don't necessarily think it's too inflammatory. but we've gone to let our emmotions cloud our better judgment. just for me to harp back on an earlier segment, we're

big money controls what goes on in washington. every american understands that. you have to be very naive not to believe that the wealthiest and most powerful institutions in this country are contributing huge amounts of money, for what reason? for the heck of it? they just want to have fun and contribute that money? of course they expect something. but that is different than saying this candidate took that amount of money and voted that way. that is not what i'm saying. what i am saying is you have a corrupt campaign finance system. i will do everything i can to overturn this disastrous citizens united supreme court decision. and in fact, i believe we should have public funding of elections. >> but your campaign did send out this excerpt from elizabeth warren, and she directly said to clinton -- >> well, that's elizabeth's point. i think the point we wanted to note -- i suspect the point that the campaign tried to make was to identify a particular vote that secretary clinton cast. by the way, they're sending out ten things a day attacking me, just to set the rec

wolf blitzer, back to you in washington. >> it's amazing how close it's been among the democrats. almost all of the votes now in -- what, 49.9% for hillary clinton. 49.6% for bernie sanders. i want to go back to jeff zeleny quickly. jeff, you're there with one of bernie sanders' top advisers. >> wolf, that's right. i'm joined by jeff weaver, the campaign manager for senator sanders. jeff, what do you make of what is still remaining out there? and are you satisfied with all the information you've gotten about this? >> well, look, there's still some of the vote out. it's very, very tight. who knows whether one of us or the other will be a couple delegates up or a couple delegates down? but this is a tremendous victory for our campaign tonight. we started in single digits and fought our way up to a tie and maybe a win. so this is really going to be a springboard for us into new hampshire and the states beyond. >> what do you think is the fund-raising possibility of this night? senator sanders raised $20 million in january online. what's your estimate of what this will do? >> well, it

they want something different to happen in washington, d.c. they are tired of the same old business being led by the same old people. and bernie represents something new. he represents a revolution that's going to adjust how business is being done in washington, d.c. and you can see that revolution taking place even in some of the remarks that hillary clinton is talking about. now she's beginning to talk about those issues that bernie has been talking about everywhere. not only in a black state of south carolina, not in harlem, but bernie sanders has been talking about that in iowa, in new hampshire. so he's been talking about those issues that are relative to the african-american community from the very beginning. >> we'll see if the young voters show up at the polls today. maria, let me come to you. does this expectation that hillary clinton will win by a large margin hurt her potentially, maybe some of the voters who were -- might have been excite philadelphia this were a much tight erase might stay home and this margin will be narrower? >>

our senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny is joining us from clinton primary headquarters in new hampshire. what kind of results do they say they're realistically expecting tonight? >> reporter: well, wolf, ever since she stepped foot in the state of new hampshire some eight days ago after iowa, they have been lowering expectations every single day. never mind all the history that the clinton campaign, the clinton family has in this state. of course 1992 is a pivotal moment and 2008 was a pivotal moment for her. they are saying they can't win. when you talk to them privately and some of her supporters, they believe she can win. the polls are all over the board. because of the independent voters we've been talking to and about all day long, some who are playing in the republican primary, they simply don't know but this is much closer than the 25 points would suggest. i am told that most sides believe this is within five points or so and that is not a lot of space or so. if they get out their vote which they have been trying to do, it could be much tighter than some of our suggesti
