i'm chris matthews in washington. it didn't take long for the political battle to start over filling justice scalia's seat. what is less than zero? the chances of obama successfully appointing a supreme court justice to replace scalia, within minutes of the justice's death. mitch mcconnell said in part, the american people should have a voice in the selection of their next supreme court justice. therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president. senator chuck grassley, the chair of the judiciary committee said given the huge divide in the country and this president above all others to use the court to circumvent congress, it only makes sense that we defer to the american people who will elect a new president to select the next supreme court justice. and senator ted cruz told chuck todd on "meet the press" he would stop any nominee at all from even being considered. >> doesn't the united states have an obligation to at least go through the process and have an up or down vote? >> not remotely. p

with a funeral held on saturday in washington. scalia's courtroom chair was draped in black yesterday in me more yum. the partisan battle over replacing him continues to up fold. during an iowa radio interview, senate judiciary committee chairman chuck grassley who's in charge of the confirmation hearings said i would wait until the nominee is made before i make decisions. but grassley said he's not open to a confirmation hearing. yesterday, president obama challenged senate republicans to rise above day to day politics. >> this will be the opportunity for senators to do their job. your job doesn't stop until you're voted out or until your term expires. i intend to do my job between now and january 20th of 2017. i expect them to do their job as well. >> and nbc's tracie potts is in washington and tracie, now we have president obama taking direct aim at the republicans. >> reporter: exactly. you know, sometimes we forget that he taught constitutional law. his argument here that this is not a partisan issue, democrats and republican

let's wrap up the week and talk about the big day ahead in south carolina with kevin robillard there in washington. good morning to you. let's get started with the day after here, we're talking about swirling politics with religion, trump versus the pope and even this cover from "the new york daily news." kind of pretty much says it all. how does this play into the bulletproofness and the unsinkableness of trump, there the daily news calls him the antichrist. >> trump has taken on everyone during this campaign. the pope gets added to the list of targets here. the one thing that trump could say in this case the pope kind of started it in this fight. but, you know, particularly in south carolina, which is coming up, this isn't going to hurt him. even, you know, a huge percentage of voters in south carolina are evangelicals. evangelicals tend to view catholicism in general with a lot of skepticism. so the fact he's in a fight with the pope isn't going to hurt him there. could it hurt him, you know, in states with larger catholic populations as things go down the line say louisiana or a lot of states

back in washington, robert costa joins us, msnbc analyst as well. the republican party's reacting now to the news of trump's dominance in different ways. for some they are pushing resistance. henry barber, the nephew of hallie barber, a member of the republican national committee said, after trump has won in new hampshire and south carolina, republicans are crazy and are about to blow the white house if we don't rally to stop him, close quote. marco rubio made the case for why the party needed to nominate him. >> we can't win. if we nominate someone, if we nominate someone that half of the republican party hates, we're going to be fighting against each other all the way to november. we will never win that way. i don't care how much you may think they're funny or how interesting they may sound. if we nominate someone that 40% to 50% of our party can't stand, we are going to lose. >> katy, i don't know what all these guys are thinking, but he sounded desperate. we've got a leak in the dike, we've got to stop this thing. >> which is the case right now.

this is to quote "morning joe's" joe scarborough in "the washington post." so is this how the party's abraham lincoln dies? what does this do to the gop? >> this is what the gop has been trying to get away from. when we got into this election they were looking at the autopsy from the last election saying we need to be more engaging of minorities, we need to be more open to other groups, people who don't traditionally vote republican and they've done the exact opposite. they've mored toward a very xenophobic, nativist territory with donald trump at the front. >> let's go over to the democrats, because bernie sanders is now coming out swinging at hillary clinton and swinging at trump. is this new strategy going to get him any more votes? >> he's really having some trouble looking towards super tuesday. doesn't look good for him. and i think just beating expectations may not be enough. there's a lot of delegates that are being handed out on tuesday and hillary clinton looks very strong to get a lot of them when they leave you know when they hit wednesday mornin

it's liberal. 43% of iowa democrats told the washington post they are socialists. god bless them. i'm happy to hear it. it wasn't a must win state. i think he did well enough with an almost win to get a little bit of momentum going. it's not the same as if he had won. it's all we would be talking about if she lost and he won is when does she drop out. we would. we heard a bit of that last night. how quickly does she have to drop out if she loses iowa. it's a tough state. she came in third in 2008. it's not just little league or t ball to say you did really well. she does get the trophy going forward. she did win. she also won -- i watched a little caucus in waterloo which is the most diverse city in iowa where john louis visited the other night. she took those ten delegates, waterloo, iowa looks more like the rest of the country than the rest of iowa does. she really does have a lot of advantages going forward. bernie is changing the narrative. i think he did himself a lot of good there. >> ben, charlie just referenced ethanol. to me, if there was was one unambiguous winner was te

national correspondent washington bureau chief for buzzfeed. when you're picking a president of the united states, everybody has to endorse up. no super president or chairman of the board to point down and say pick this guy. how do you endorse up? whether you're al sharpton or congressional black caucus. how do you tell to vote for somebody. endorsements matter for president? >> they do in the sense that particularly for african-american voters, there is still a core of the black vote that is largely, you know, not entirely, but that is very much influenced by religious leaders, by the church. that voter who is in a certain demographic, meaning, black voters over 40 who do still believe in the influence of the civil rights move and reverend al sharpton is that second generation, so i think there is still something to be said for endorsements. they do still feel they have something to say. now, by the way, the entire sort of weight of the black political class endorsed hillary clinton last time and that didn't way voters at all. they went with o

i do think there's a benefit to understanding how the process works in washington. much as we all think it needs to change, and i think that, one of the things i hear the most as i travel around new hampshire is why can't you guys just work together to deal with the problems facing the country. we need somebody who understands how to reach across the aisle. i think hillary has that. she has that history. that's what she did in the senate. it's what she ditd in the white house. it's what she did as secretary of state. >> the argument on the other side is we have this structure problem that's grown up in american politics. it's not just you guys. >> in the depths of the worth great depression could barely get more than two or three votes for a stimulus bill. >> when the united states was threatened by hitler in world war ii, one vote is what it took to pass the draft. it was just one vote to make that pass so that we could actually build the resources we needed to go fight to save the free world. i think this idea it's going to be overwhelming and easy is not right. >

as the washington examiner points out 1.2 million people voted in republican primaries and caucuses so far. that's up 24% from 2012. these contrasting trends in voter turn out between democrats and republicans should not concern bernie sanders but could be a warning to the entire democratic party. are democrats suffering from enthusiasm gap and will that haunt them in november. joy, there's a bunch of ways you can read this data. what is your read of this so far? >> there's a couple ways to read it. one way is the shadow reelect phenomenon where democrats already have the white house. they are not motivated to take back the white house. they believe a lot of democratic voters assume hillary clinton will be the nominee, don't feel any urgency to go out and do anything about this. they may come back in the fall. the danger for bernie sanders is in that presumption is whether he has an actual chance of being the nominee meaning there's less nomination thinking he isn't going to win any way. the people northeast motivated to make a change are a small minority of the democrat party who want
