. >> cbs4's shawn chitness live along i-25 near arapahoe with a closer look. shawn. >> reporter: alan and britt, good morning. cdot is certainly excited about one of the new tolls that -- tools that they are going to be putting to good use as we get look at this tow plow, they were showing it off yesterday. they have 13 of these ready to go that they'll be using and they'll bring in another 10 with the new year. we're told that with these different plows they can actually clear two lanes of traffic at the same time. this of course will allow them to open up the roads sooner and they'll be able to get the job done using less people. they also have 142 of the more traditional plows just for 90 focused on the i-70 mountain corridor. >> doing our job safely and effectively means getting moms and dads to and from work, children home from school, friends to community events, and goods that we all depend on delivered safely to their destination. >> reporter: so with the traditional plows and especially with these new plows, that same phrase is just as important, if n

cbs4's shawn chitness is along colfax and florence for us that area, shawn. >> reporter: yeah, britt, they were out for about an hour at least and it was an eerie scene to see no light on the businesses, street lights as well as the traffic lights. glad to report at least at this intersection along colfax the power is back on. but still quite a few people who need to get their power back, we've been reporting that number as high as 27,000, now around 18,000. we're getting told by xcel this went out just before 4:00 a.m. and they are working to get it back. they're not sure exactly when they can open up. they said something happened at a sub station and that's causing this outage. 8,000 customers without power restored already. probably another 18,000 that still need to have their power restored. it will happen in sections because of how large this is. they'll be working to get different areas back on the grid. we're told the ar affected from colfax to alameda and yosemite to sable. we're basically in the northwest corner of where all this is happening. they have an estimate maybe when

shawn chitness has more. we talked to the homeowner. >> reporter: the video is certainly incredible. but we are happy to report that both the victim and the good samaritan in this case are recovering from their shooting injuries. the search does continue for that suspect. take a look at this video. it's surveillance video from that good samaritan's home. a camera posted outside by the door. we see this woman running to th and then soon after her boyfriend coming to try and grab her as well. we know he had a gun. and then as she is unable to get away and he takes her away, the good samaritan, the man living in that house. brian geer, comes out and runs after her. and we know both she, the girlfriend of the suspect, as well as mr. geer, were shot in the leg by that suspect. but he was able to get away and their injuries. some are calling him a hero now. >> i think i helped. i think i helped, when some people might not have. but i don't know if that's hero status. >> reporter: so he is actually thankful she deci

cbs4's shawn chitness is live along i-25 and thornton parkway with this test. good morning. >> reporter: britt, good morning. that testing about to happen in about 30 minutes here. there are several of these smart signs set up along i-25, so you shouldn't miss it if you're on the right stretch of the road. take a look at this picture here and this graphic, that gives you a sense of what you'll be told bill on one side you can see speeds suggested for you as you're coming to an area that might have a crash, and on the other side you see more specific information about which lanes to avoid and go into. that's really the idea here, to provide more accurate information to drivers ahead of time so when there is an accident, these smart signs can warn drivers which lane will be closed and what lanes to move into before you get to that down because of those speeds. the signs will run from 120th avenue in northglenn down to i- 76. that's along i-25 here and research in other states has shown when you have these signs the number of crashes actually goes down by about 30

our shawn chitness is live with more information on sheriff's office doesn't have too much to go by, because the victim in this case doesn't really remember or have any info to give them. that's why they need the public's help and specifically they're trying to find this couple they think may have witnessed the attack inside the courthouse. take a look at this video and this picture that shows us the couple that the sheriff's office is looking for. this is from surveillance video that shows the couple near where that senior citizen was attacked. later the couple is seen at the courthouse. an 82-year-old man was visiting the courthouse october 3rd, and after he finished up at the dmv he went to the rest room near the public defender's office. when he left he was punched hard in the face or the door was shoved into him and he broke his nose. he'll recover from those injuries, but he doesn't have much to give the sheriff's office. it's why they're looking to find that couple. if you recognize that couple or you know anything about this in contact the investigator on this case. we have t

our shawn chitness is live where that crash happened. good morning, what do you know? >> reporter: britt, quite a fast changing scene all morning long. behind me we can see the intersection back open. really every half hour something different was happening here all night. at the intersection is back open. this all started somewhere else. likely outside of a bar in lodo where that shooting happened. we know at least one person was injured in that shooting trying to get to the hospital. that person along with some other people got into this car that rolled over, a chevy suv. they were heading south on kalamath as they ran a red light and crashed into another car, a nissan path finder. there was another person in that car. people inside. they had to extricate one person, remove the door from the side of the car, and they were all taken to the hospital. the one person in the other car also taken to the hospital. six in all. denver police telling us just about an hour ago that two people do have serious injuries at the hospital. now the scene is cleared, and at least they

shawn chitness live with what we have learned. >> reporter: we were able to learn in the last few hours that this is a homicide denver police are investigating. understandable they spent quite behind me, this is the intersection they had closed off and had a lot of different officers and cruisers in the area for most of the night and into the morning. just opening up this area really within the last 10 or 20 minutes. if you look at what the scene looked like earlier, they took over much of the apartment complex as well as the business area that is here. side and businesses on the other side. someone was shot and killed and denver police are investigating this as a homicide. it's unclear who they might be looking for, if they have suspect descriptions of who might be responsible, as well as what led up to this shooting. those are the details we're waiting to hear from denver police. we first learned about this a little bit before 10:00 p.m. wednesday night. a lot of time has gone by. we're waiting to learn more from police later today. live i cbs4 morning news. >>> arapahoe county sherif

cbs4's shawn chitness live at the courthouse in denver where investigators will be anxiously awaiting the arrival of this man. he knows he's wanted, shawn. >> reporter: right, alan. in a few hours from now we'll find out if he does show up for charges related to domestic violence. denver police hoping samson whit more shows up so they can arrest him with charges of graffiti on the 32-year-old is a registered sex offender and considered violent and stalking the campus. graffiti was found around the university and united methodist church near the school was done by whitmore. they were able to identify what was spray painted across campus and tie it back to the suspect. they found it in several different places. now they're waiting to see if he does show up at the court appearance scheduled for 8:00 >>> thank you. the wildfire in southern colorado is doing more damage than initially thought. it's already burned more than 25 square miles near pueblo. it has already destroyed five homes so far and there is zero containment. here's our matt kroschel with the latest. >> reporter: at a commun

copter 4 was over that scene and cbs4's shawn chitness worked his way out there. this is pretty much wrapped up. firefighters getting ready to clear the scene. from where i'm standing i can see this is primarily a garage fire with damage to the top of the house. let's take another look at some of that video from copter 4. we're being told by crews here with west metro that this call came in around 5:30. there was work being done at the garage inside this house and that likely caused some fire by accident. it spread, destroyed a car that is inside the garage, and also spread up to the top of house. primarily to the outside of one of the bedrooms. enough damage to keep the homeowner away from the home until they can get those remares -- repairs done. no one was injured and investigators will try to figure out what the cause was. like in lakewood -- live in lakewood, shawn chitness, cbs4 news. >>> we have a new round of protests in many cities around the country over donald trump's election win. oregon. people lit firecrackers and destroyed property. this is what it
