well, it'll soon be a reality for those in the bay area as the cross bay ferry sets sail for the very first time. live in st. pete. mary, we know how aggravating it can be to sit in traffic on those bridge. how long will it take to cross the bay by ferry? >>reporter: well, to get from downtown st. pete over to the tampa convention center it will take about 50 minutes. so a little bit longer than sitting in a car, but something tells me that commute will be a whole lot more beautiful sitting on this ferry. now, the cross bay ferry is the brain child of st. pete mayor rick crisman who convinced the city council to toss in going, along with identical contributions from tampa, hillsboro county and pinellas county governments. st. pete also contributed another $100,000 in startup costs and to create this docking facility, a ul for this six-month trial run -- all for this six-month trial run. >> the sense of wind blowing through your hair, the sense of it's fun and there's no better way to arrive into a new city than to get off of a dock instead of out of a car. >>reporter: now, this ferry
