let's take you to florida first. this is the first state standing in the way of tropical storm isaias. randi kaye is in palm beach county for us. first let's check in on the storm's latest track and meteorologist chad myers joins us from the cnn weather center. chad, what is in store for florida and the east coast? >> i think the storm is blowing up right now, which means getting bigger. blowing up as an explosive development. it was dying all day, it looked horrible all day. dry air. it was over land basically. not very high land but still wasn't over warm water. now it's over water. now we've got the shear out of the way and the dry air out of the way and there is a huge thunderstorm complex to the north of what we call the center. it's an eye, yes, but it doesn't really look like an eye yet on radar. but if this northern part wraps around and becomes an eye, we're going to get rapid intensification in the overnight hours. right now we're somewhere around a 66 to 70-mile-per-hour storm. there's some shear on the wa

we know of 2300 already here in florida. and florida power and light said they have a staging area in daytona where they have 10,000 personnel ready to go. they have crews that came in from new york and texas, all to help from 20 different states in fact. they're trying to get people together and trying to get a jump on this because of the coronavirus. this is one emergency on top of another, so they're already expecting delays because the crews will have to social distance, they'll have to sanitize the equipment, have to do temperature checks. so it is kind of a slow process in terms of getting the power restored, we also know there are more than 1 00 people in shelters this morning here in palm beach county. they set up five shelters at high schools. so people could safely social distance, they'll be providing shelter kits with hand sanitizers and masks as well and try to keep the family units together. the governor said he was hoping to open some hotel rooms for people who might be symptomatic so they didn't have to go to

in the u.s., florida has warnings. isaias is expected to produce high winds, heavy rains, and flash floods. in preparation, florida shut down dozens of covid-19 testing sights. sam brock is joining me on the ground in miami. sam, i suspect it's early where you are but somewhat of a tale of two days, beautiful and then deteriorating. >> reporter: sounds about right, kendis. good morning. it is quite literally the calm before the storm. right now there's a bit of a breeze and a mist on miami beach where i'm standing right now. the track of isaias has shifted a little bit to the east. that's what my weather folks are telling me. there's still a chance, kendis, the eye of the storm can make landfall in florida. if it did, it would be a little north to where we are now, somewhere between palm beach county and the space coast, northeast of that. isaias will be carrying some pretty strong winds. in the miami area, it's tropical-force winds, but still it's 80, 90 miles an hour. depending on how close it gets to our coastline,

when do we see it making landfall in florida? >> it's about 125 miles from miami and the problem with that is that this storm has reacted very badly today. it almost killed itself earlier today with dry air running over androse island. there was nothing left. look what has happened in the past three hours. 9 storm has exploded again. i know we knew it was going to get bigger, but nothing like this. this was really -- i don't want to use the word unprecedented, but i've not seen convection start like this in a storm that was literally trying to dry up. winds are already here 25, 30 miles per hour coming on shore. every time a storm comes on you could get a water spout. you certainly will get gustier winds. if it's 8:00 in the morning, the left-hand side of the cone north of miami, west of palm. the right-hand side of the cone, both sides are possible. the middle is more likely. it doesn't hit land at all. in fact, as we take it up the coast, if you follow the right-hand side of the cone, it's still not on shore. then the middle of
