so going through the relationship jill biden had with the late john mccain of course. joe biden was in the senate. john mccain was an aid in the senate. he had just been released from captivity. that started their friendship over some 30 years or so. i'm told that president trump's name is not going to be mentioned in this video, but he of course, is the subtext of all of this. one thing that will be mentioned i'm told is the vote that john mccain took in the summer of 2017 that essentially saved obamacare. he voted against the repeal of that so it is something that certainly earned him the ire of the trump administration and it's something he's never gotten over. this is something that is going to be one more in a series of argument really aimed at republicans and moderates as well if joe biden was liked by john mccain, perhaps that should translate into it's time for a new direction. the other thing that bonds them is brain cancer. beau biden died of brain cancer, nearly the same kind john mccain had. he talked about them as brothers. so i'm told this is going to be

friendship and the one about jill biden. her speech was remarkable too in the sense it was an affirmative case for her husband. i don't think she mentioned president trump, quite stark contrast to first lady michelle obama's speech last evening. what i'm taking away in terms of the message from the democratic national convention on the second night is basically normalcy. that seems to really be a big part of the pitch, that joe biden is somebody who will allow the country to return to normalcy. first of all as a philadelphiian it's great to here the willow grove accent. seriously, music to my years. but the idea of just how normal the bidens seem with the military service, she's a teacher. she got her graduate degree a little later in life. a blended family, and adversity that they had to work through. and then of course we've heard and talked a lot about what the messages are in the sense of republicans are so featured in this democratic convention. we had that with general colin powell and john mccain, that friendship. but

we just got an excerpt from jill biden's speech. and i'm quoting, how do you make a broken family whole? the same way you make a nation whole, with love and understanding and with small acts of compassion with bravery, with unwavering faith. that's a direct quote. so what does that say about what else we can expect to hear from her later tonight? >> well, it's always the job of the spouse to help humanize the candidate. in the case of joe biden, because that is largely his calling card, his humanity, his empathy, we've heard it from other people. but it's obviously different when it's his wife and it's a wife who he married and who immediately became a mother to his two sons who lost their own mother as babies in a car crash. so, the story is just horrific and heartwrenching, but obviously they believe, very telling, when it comes to joe biden's character. but the other part of jill biden's speech that they released in an excerpt is talking about schools and the fact that she is a teacher. she's now a college professor. but she was

jill biden saying, the quiet around here is stifling in her speech. it's a message that they are focused on. >> absolutely. and these numbers tell you exactly why they are focused on it. honestly, the economy may be a strong point for trump, but the coronavirus is one of his weakest and it's a top, important issue. that's why he's seeing democrats go after trump on this. >> and even 38% of republicans say that they are embarrassed. more embarrassed about the response there. the vaccine, this is an interesting number, harry. we don't have a vaccine yet, but if we do, only a bare majority of americans say they would take it. >> in fact, it's going down. it was 66% in may, now down to 56%. and a slight majority of trump supporters, 51% say say they would take it. now down to 38%. even among biden supporters, it's a clear majority, but not all of them. about a quarter either say they're not sure or they won't necessarily take it. only 74% say they will. here's the nugget i think is so interesting. i went all the way back to 1954, when there was talk about

jill biden assured voters that biden can heal a divided nation. we get more now from cnn's jeff zeleny in wilmington. >> reporter: the second night of the democratic national convention settled under the virtual convention mode in a much easier way. some of the old school methods, the roll call vote, for example, really came to life on the screen in ways that they had not in years before. democratic officials expressed to me afterwards, really excitement about this. seeing it come to life on social media on twitter, even engagement, just watching the state by state roll call. largely this is a proforma exercise that's happened inside the convention wall. because of the realities of the pandemic it was taken outside the hall and showed tapestry of america, americans that are indeed democrats will vote for joe biden. so that was viewed by democratic officials as actually somewhat of a surprising success but it was overall the humanizing of joe biden. really in speech after speech, even in some of the toughest speeches from former president bill clin
