>> michelle obama is actually a great communicator in her own right. and she really has an ability to speak from the heart but to throw some subtle jabs. i think at the heart of her speech was about character. she said it's the most important thing in a presidency and it's what is most thoroughly lack about this president. she tried to tie aspects of the obama legacy to a broader bipartisan legacy of presidents shoring up international organizations, mentioning reagan and eisenhower, two republicans and saying look, donald trump has been a stark departure from that and he has an inability to empathize with other people, and that's what the presidency is about. you know, a great convention speech. and there have been many of them. ultimately is about trying to put forward a positive vision of the nation and project it forward. some democrats sometimes have a hard time embracing patriotism in a full sense. some want to keep it at arm's length. but successful progressives in particular know how to tie their vision to something that's fundamentally patriot

michelle obama hitting the white house for chaos, lack of empathy, as michelle obama ended her speech at one point saying it is what it is, quoting the president. is this messaging that is going to work for the democrats as we head into november? >> well, it certainly not the democrats need a lot of push or argument to oppose donald trump. we see in the polls that there is more enthusiasm to vote against trump than on the part of democrats than to vote for joe biden. i thought -- i'm glad you put that sound bite up of that woman. it was the most single powerful moment from last night. the daughter of someone who voted for donald trump saying her argument that because of her trust in him he ended up -- starting today with joe biden's wife and then tomorrow with barack obama and then finally on thursday with joe biden, you are going to hear much more of the affirmative case for joe biden. in the end i was thinking about it this morning. it seems to me that we can do everything -- they can do everything they want, the democrats can, to make the arguments. but in the end the most importan

i think for michelle obama obviously quite emotional towards the end of her keynote speech. for someone who famously does not like politics and even mentioned that during her speech this is perhaps one of the most searing indictments of the trump presidency that we've heard she talked about how there not been just a failure of policy but a failure of character and she said that doesn't just make me upset it's infuriating and then the point that she was making is that donald trump. had not met the moment and was not fit to be president and therefore that is why in her opinion the country should vote for joe biden she made the point and it's a very good point that people will listen to her because michelle obama what will still popular in the country and particularly popular with democrats she does divide opinion and a lot of republicans simply do not like her so they are not going to listen to what she has to say but clearly what the democrats are hoping is that she can reach it to some republicans and we've heard from plenty over the last 2 hours who are changing their vote
