the dallas police department and the dallas rapid transit police department. they have essentially the same functions, as you heard the mayor say just now. there are about 100 police officers out on duty on the street tonight to monitor, as they put it, assist the demonstrators who were demonstrating in dallas tonight and in other cities around the country, in protest of police use of deadly force in cases that were videotaped, captured on videotape this week. one in baton rouge, louisiana. the other in minnesota. those videotapes have sent people into the streets around the country. and as the police chief reported, it was about 8:50 p.m. in dallas tonight, that would be 9:50 p.m. eastern time, when shots suddenly rang out. shots clearly now we know aimed at police officers. you heard the report just now that some of those police officers were shot in the back. the negotiations with one of the shooters -- there's now been reports there are two shooters and the police chief said the two shooters took up positions in a parking garage, in elevated positions. and

dallas will work with the community. other cities will embrace and engage with the community for a better way forward. and it's just not police. it's all of us together. and if we don't wake up and we don't realize what's going on, then these things are becoming the norm and we don't need this to become the norm. we need to thank police officers. we need to understand as citizens we have rights and we want better communities, we want safer communities where we live, work and our children play, and we want police officers to go home and we want citizens to go home to their family and we want to feel for everyone, and this is not some utopian idea, this is not utilitarian. 800,000 police officers across the nation, it's 3,500 police officers in dallas, but yet we are not monolithic in our thinking and we are trained. so please, i implore the listening audience to work with your local police, work with your politicians, sit down at the table together and let's see how when e can stop days like t from happening in the future

it's a pretty progressive community here in dallas county. and our officers intermingle with the protesters and these things are done peacefully all the time. unfortunately in this situation, mr. johnson targeted officers and killed and injured people. >> and do you have a personal concern, sir, that an incident like this, that has so shaken the police officers in dallas county and in the city of dallas, could actually worsen the relationship between police officers in the community. are you concerned about that? >> well, that can happen, but mr. johnson chose his path and he chose his actions. now we get to choose ours. the leadership is calling for unity. and calling for -- what i'm asking is that our fellow man, we look -- try to look at life through the eyes of someone who is not like us. if you're white, try to understand what it's like to tell your children there's a different set of rules for your middle schoolchildren as they grow up than for your neighbor's. if you're not the family of a first responder, try to imagine what it's like

just because this individual lived near dallas that it happened there. so, it's a tough time to be a police officer, but they're going to stick together and still going to get the job done as far as emergency and as far as serious crime is concerned. >> i want to cover a couple of things. in terms of the approach and the way the police officers' jobs may change, we've spoken in the past about body cameras, about new technology that has come into the situation to assist those trying to protect the country. what do you see in terms of changes and how the police force might look different? >> well, i think body cameras are here to stay. some departments have embraced it. others are a little bit more reluctant. but probably in five to seven years, you'll see that as a standard piece of equipment. i think that's a good thing, because you'll see these youtube videos that will cover an incident and start midway through it. now we'll have the opportunity to look at the entire event as it happens, and i think it will show so much beneficial good heroic work that'

dallas-ft. worth area and if that area and through much of the country, no one is talking budget. known is talking health care. no one is talking even the primaries tonight. everyone is talking. about what is being unleashed in the most populous areas of the country, a first in recent memory for this keen -- kind of thing. and janice, what is going on? >> i have been here nine years and never seen tornado warnings in the dallas-ft. worth area like this. we first reported the first warning before 2:00 p.m. and now it is 4:00 eastern and they are under siege. tornado watches they have issued a new juan, so the watch for dallas-ft. worth going until 5:00 p.m. local time with a if you watch as they expect the storms to continue to move east and possibly produce more tornadoes for parts of eastern texas into louisiana and arkansas. right now we are watching the cells blossom, very destructive reports to damage and homes and betses and we still have tornado warn evening right here for the dallas-ft. w

dallas police have not confirmed that. but we have confirmation there was a suspicious person inside a garage, used by the dallas police department and not open to the general public. that person was spotted by one or two dallas police department employees. they attempted to stop that person, that person ran. so there was a suspicious person inside the garage, used by the dallas police department. not long after the dallas police department announced it had received a credible threat about a threat towards the members of its department. so they receive a threat, then they spot someone inside the garage that only they can use, and they have now locked down this entire area. there are police on nearly every corner. there are s.w.a.t. officers inside that garage and on the outside of the garage. there are officers with weapons drawn outside the garage, taking defensive positions behind vehicles, brick walls and trees. and we have spotted officers inside the roof of the parking structure and the second floor, appearing to go c

let's head right now to dallas. that is where craig melvin has the latest on the fallout from these shootings. craig, with an early good morning to you many let's talk about what we are seeing on the ground. how are people coping in dallas? >> you know, i think the front page of the dallas "morning news" sums it up best. very simply, "we're hurting." above the fold there, the pictures of the five officers that you just mentioned there. this is, alex, as you likely know by now, this is a city that had been doing much better in regards to bridging the gap between the police and the people who live here. instances of excessive force complaints down. even arrests down, murders down. there had actually been somewhat of a celebration in and out the police force of how far they had come here in dallas. and then of course yesterday morning you've got a guy that is a-year-old who commits this heinous hate crime. telling piece he shot the officers, he hunted them down because he hated white people and he specifically wanted t

this is happening in dallas on the eve of president obama visiting dallas tomorrow. president obama came home early from his european trip in order to attend an interfaith service at dallas symphony hall tomorrow. there is word tonight president obama is writing his own speech for that event tomorrow in dallas instead of having his speechwriters do it for him. he took that same approach in charleston, south carolina in the wake of the massacre there and did that at the anniversary of the march in selma and did it on a few other occasions and tends to lead to very dramatic speeches. visitation hours begins tomorrow in dallas for some officers killed last week. this is the head of the funerals for slain officers slain on thursday. we got world of philando castile killed last thursday in minnesota, his funeral will be held thursday in st. paul and this friday will be the funeral for alton sterling killed by police in baton rouge. tonight, in baton rouge there's a prayer service taking place tonight. as you can see, that's a live shot in baton rouge right now. that has a
