meteorologist danielle niles joining us with more on the drought. danielle, exactly what areas are affected. >> well, a lot of eastern massachusetts is now impacted. so i just want to give you some numbers here. the extreme drought has been expanding 17% of massachusetts, including the city of boston, 4% of new hampshire, mainly in 47% of massachusetts is in a severe drought category, 15% of new hampshire, this is the driest summer, so june, july, august, we've ever had in the city of boston. obviously a few more weeks to go. but no significant rain in sight. just your typical sprinkles, showers, thunderstorms. so all the areas you see here in red, we're at the severe drought is in effect. the numbers you see on here, the year-to-date departure, the deficit we are in for rainfall, zooming in, areas metro west inside of 495, and southern new hampshire. where are the raindrops? we had a couple sprinkles this morning. but the skies have cleared out now. we will have a few clouds that build in later this afternoon. temperatures running in the mid-80s ri

let's go over to danielle niles what do we expect up here? >> well i have to say the brunt of the storm is going to pass to the south. we are on the edge. we have got winter storm warnings up from northern mississippi to new york city where the blizzard watch is expanded across new jersey and the mid atlantic. so blizzard watch meaning visibilities is reduced to a quarter of a mile or less for 3 or more hours. where is the storm now? up now. so we have a big upper-level low that's spinning near missouri and thunderstorms starting to fire now along the gulf coast states. the storm is going to continue over the next several hours. kind of intensifying here and redeveloping off the carolina and delmarva coastline. snow arrives by the time we get the philadelphia new york city area. for us, we are quiet until then. snow arrives from south to north by the time we get to saturday evening. there may be some mixing that occurs in southeastern massachusetts and out of here by the time we get to early on sunday morning wrapping up. so snowfall totals t

meteorologist, danielle niles is here. are you getting whiplash from this forecast? what an influx of temperatures >> whiplash in the sense of this wind that will start to of the day today. it is remarkable to watch this region. the temperature in boston is 49 degrees. it has taken a little bit of rise in southern new hampshire we are above freezing from manchester back down to nashua. pittsburgh still sitting at 3432 in concord. fifties from lawrence to bedford, fog in between as well. 55-57 hear from milton back down to taunton and the upper 40s to low 50s on the cape as well. we have been tracking a couple of showers generally light right now. a few scattered in nature. there are a couple of pockets of light freezing rain that are still lingering north of keene right now into southern indenture. where do we go through here? a lot of us come well into the 50s. and then the heavy rain moves in west to east retweet 3 p.m. and 9 p.m. time timeframe. that coincides with the strongest wind gusts as well. the heaviest rain will push offshore after about 7 o 'clock- 8 o'c

danielle niles is tracking it and joins us with the latest. >> could be a top three storm for dc as the snow hones in on the nation's capital. we have winter weather advisories and winter storm warnings all the way from portions of alabama louisiana, england. red shading from dc to philly to baltimore to long island to new york city and newark included, are the blizzard warnings. for us here in southern new england we have a winter storm watch that will likely be upgraded to a warning by this evening for the south croft bristol plight south county and cape -- plymouth county and cape and islands. the snow is advancing into dc within the next hour or so. thunderstorms off the coastline a sign of the storm center that's going toe redeveloping off the carolina coastline. ice in between and we have had thundersnow in nashville lots of ingredients into the storm. what does it mean for us the rest of the day today it's quiet and chilly the winds subsides temporarily and through the remainder of the day. tonight the clouds thicken tomorrow and 7 a.m. we are doing just fine. the snow will be in

but summer is getting ready to make a return, danielle niles joins us now. she has a look at the forecast. >> you can believe it we'll be near 90 by the end of the week. so big turn around in store. definitely gloomy out there right now. temperatures feeling a little bit fallish. boston at 68. stretching back up to -- up to laurens, 71 in concord. 73 in keen. and lower to middle 70s from taunton. we are tracking a couple of showers. most of them light. there is hermine post tropical, still packing shstrong winds near the storm's center out over the ocean. but our wind threat is done. now it's the bands of moisture, light moisture at that. so the few pockets of drizzle, light rain showers, on the east side of harvard. a few more all holliston stretching to norwood. then plymouth hugging is coastline. a couple of sprinkles near the canal as well. the wind currently is 10 to 15 miles per hour. this is the sustained wind. we're gusting a little bit higher. but not all that strong at the coastline. the seas are obviously still churned up. so the high surf and the
