dylan dreyer is back with us this morning. she is driving along i-81 in western virginia. and dylan, here we go. talk to me about what you're seeing. >> reporter: well, i am still seeing nothing but white. that has been the case since earlier this morning. the snow started in christiansburg, virginia, where we started off this morning at 5:00 a.m. and since then, the snow has not stopped. we are in and out of near whiteout conditions. we're not dealing with a lot of the wind yet that we'll see as this storm inches closer to washington, d.c. the storm will strengthen off the mid-atlantic coast. that's why we're going to see more wind, up to 60-mile-per-hour gusts possible. so, luckily, we're not seeing that blowing, drifting snow right now, but you can see that the roads are certainly snow covered. a few plows have gone through. so, people are moving along fine. there have not been a lot of cars on the roads. so, that's made our travel a lot easier. we are just going slow and steady. want to point out that the bluemobile that we're in is a very heavy vehicle. i've had some

nbc's dylan dreyer is back with some conditions that led to this monster hurricane. break this down for us. i want to dig into the science. how did we get here? how did this get so big? >> it got to big because there was nothing breaking it apart. it developed into this massive storm and there was no -- no dry air, no high winds to shear off the top of the storm, no cold water it was running into. let's go back to september 28th when it was a tropical storm. as soon as it started running into water temperatures in the upper 80-degree range, that's when it gained that strength. quickly went from a tropical storm up to hurricane category 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. it sits in the caribbean as category 5 hurricane. barely hits western haiti. close enough to cause significant devastation to western haiti, but not enough land interaction to break this thing apart. then it moved into cuba, which is a little more mountainous. because of the mountains of cuba, after it moved through eastern cuba, it went from a category 4. that's what caused it to weaken to a category 3. it did not have
