cnn's jomana karadsheh is following the story in amman, jordan. jomana, thanks for being with us. the syrian government says they are targeting terrorists in the country, but at a hospital and blood bank and school? >> reporter: well, george, after that lull, a pause for three weeks almost in air strikes on eastern aleppo, it seems the nightmare for the people resumed with the heavy bombardment. we have seen according to activists and residents we have spoken to in eastern aleppo, they say the helicopters are dropping inn discriminate barrel bombs. as you mentioned, 87 people were killed just in one day, on wednesday, in this renewed bombardment of eastern aleppo and rebel-held parts of the countryside. that included children, too. in one neighborhood, george, the focus of the air strikes was on an area where five medical facilities were located. as you know, these are the last of the medical facilities still operating in eastern aleppo. a children's hospital and blood bank. the syrian government saying this is a preliminary operation. they say there will be a ground push on sever

cnn's jomana karadsheh is joining us live from amman, jordan. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, christine. in about 24 hours time from now, that is the deadline set for the various groups fighting on the ground in syria with the exception of isis and al nusra to confirm participation in the cessation of hostilities that is set to go into effect at midnight saturday local time. as you mentioned, there is still more questions than answers at this point. about how it will be implemented and enforced and who is overseeing it. lots of details still missing. one component is trust. that is something that is extremely lacking in the conflict. also, we are hearing this, christine, from u.s. officials. the pentagon voicing real suspicion and skepticism with russia and intentions here. what russia is doing is working with the united states to get the cessation of hostilities in place versus what russia is doing behind the scenes and on the ground with u.s. officials saying they have been seeing evidence over the past few weeks of russia backing the

cnn's jomana karadsheh is in amman, jordan with details. good morning, jomana. >> reporter: good morning, john. violence in two major cities on sunday. in homs, two cars packed with explosives detonated in a commercial and residential area. in the center of homs there, more than 30 people killed in the attack. the same neighborhood, this is a neighborhood which is the same neighborhood sect where bashar al assad belongs. this is the fourth attack in the last few months. later on in the day, john, we saw attacks taking place in damascus in the southern outskirts in the shi'a area. a major shi'a holy shrine in the area. a car bomb detonated and as first responders and crowds gathered, two suicide bombers struck there. more than 80 people killed in that attack and more than 100 others injured. we have seen several attacks also in that area. the last one we saw three weeks ago. repeated attacks claimed by isis. this coming on the same day as we saw secretary of state john kerry here in the jordanian capital speaking saying that russian an ameri

we have jomana karadsheh with more from jordan. you hear more about the attacks on hospitals and on a school. essentially hitting children and sick. it makes you wonder if anything is off limits in syria. >> reporter: absolutely, alison. devastating attacks on monday in syria that have drawn a long list of international condemnation. human rights groups saying attacks on medical facilities amount to war crimes. doctors without borders, msf says the facility it supports was struck several times in idlib. it killed and wounded several people. as you mentioned, they are saying it is a deliberate attack. this is the fifth time msf has been hit in syria since the beginning of the year. no one is taking responsibility for this attack, but a lot of blame being pointed toward the syrian regime and their russian allies. we have not heard anything official from either country at this point. the syrian ambassador to moscow coming out and saying it was the u.s.-led coalition that caused this attack saying it was an air strike, but coalition of

we have jomana karadsheh with us. jomana, mnf hit again? how did this happen? >> reporter: it drew a lot of international condemnation. attacks on medical facilities would amount to war crimes. you mentioned msf was hit in a span of several times in a span of few minutes. this is the fifth such attack on doctors without borders since january. there is no claim of responsibility. it is not clear who was behind the attack. there is a lot of blame pointed toward the syrian regime and russian allies. the syrian ambassador to moscow came out and blamed the u.s.-led coalition saying it was an air strikes by the coalition that hit the msf hospital. officials dismissed that. saying they did not have operations in the idlib area. in aleppo province near the border with turkey, there is a school housing displaced people and hospital for mothers and babies also struck in an attack there. several people killed and wounded. again, not clear who is behind that attack, but the turkish prime minister came out with a statement saying that it was a ballistic missile fired by rus
