let's talk about this with cnn senior political reporter who is in washington. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell was quick to say he didn't think the president should nominate a replacement for scalia. president obama vowed he will nominate someone quickly. how long could the process drag out? >> quite sometime if you look at histor historical, typically they take 67 days on average. the longest when robert -- nomination was rejected three decades ago. that took 108 days. this is poised to smash that record. we are looking at right now mcconnell saying the president should not nominate anyone. if he sticks to his demand and decides not to allow a confirmation vote on the senate floor and if they deny a confirmation hearing in the senate, judiciary committee it is certainly likely there will be no nominee confirmed this year. that means it will drag on to the next presidency. it could take two or three months in the next administration. we can look for more than year. the question is whether or not political pressure will force republicans to change. >> i'm

let's talk more about this with cnn senior washington correspondent joe johns, who is in henderson. so -- joe, give us an idea of the mood there. whether there is a feeling that clinton has to work hard for support, or if she can feel fairly comfortable in that state? >> well, let me tell you, we are, fred, at an event for organized labor. it's a get out the vote event in henderson, north carolina. just got through hearing from randy weingarten, the president of the american federation of teachers, organized labor. so important to both of these democratic candidates in the state of nevada. so much so that the culinary union, probably the largest are and most powerful union here in this area decided not to endorse anyone, at least in this stage. focus on the general election. that's an indication that there could be a fight ahead for the caucuses, just seven days from today. right here in nevada. hillary clinton, also, today, putting out a fund-raising letter, telling people that she was outragised by $500 million, asking supporters to send her money to get ready for super tuesday in

. >> joe johns, cnn, washington. >> let's talk more about the impact of justice scalia and the influence he had on those he knew and worked with. joining me on the phone, the honorable who clerked for antonin scalia when he was a judge on the u.s. court appeals and after his appointment to the u.s. supreme court. thank you so much for joining us. >> thank you for having me. >> your reaction to his passing? >> well, it's a huge loss. i mean, he was both a great scholar and a great justice and a great legal thinker and i think, you know, he will be very much missed both on the court and by the country. >> can you describe what it was like to clerk for him? >> it was very stimulating and really quite splendid. it was a little scary at first because when we were working on a case, he might ask the law clerks what he thought about it and not infrequently, as soon as you described your views, he might then say, oh, that's completely stupid. or that's completely ridiculous. or, that can't be right. but the key to working for justice scalia was to understand that he didn't mean that's stupid or

. >> there was a play that ran in washington that was a one character play, justice scalia talking. imagine that about a supreme court justice. there's an opera in the works. that is the kind of influence he had. but the thing is, it wasn't just popular culture. it was in the juris prudence of the court. there is a concept called originalism. which means the constitution should be interpreted as the framers of the constitution understood it in the late 18th century. and that is something he is deeply associated with, justice thomas is too. but justice scalia was the popularizer of it. and that means the justices in the 18th century weren't thinking about abortion rights, weren't thinking about gay rights. there is no recognition of those things in this view under the constitution. now justice ginsburg and scalia's opponents say, no, no, no, the constitution is a living document, it has to be interpreted in terms of current, what the world is like today. justice scalia defined that fight over 30 years. and you know, that's a huge, huge example of his influence. >> what do we know abo
