a lot of the republican members leave they have been sent to washington to obstruct. they might use a different word, but they believe that is what the voters in their district want and there are large pockets of voters around the country who do want to approach the president on anything he does -- democrats will try to make this message.n they are going to talk about republican obstructionism, the senate, not giving merrick garland a fair hearing, the hearing and the vote he deserves. but democrats will focus on republican obstructionism and try to use that against the incumbents. guest: i will respond -- i want to point out that the republicans could be criticized over the last two years. just want to stop everything that president obama wants to do. nathan is right. say, yeah,can voters that's why we sent them there. but there is also a growing movement on the democratic side like that. the whole bernie sanders message is we have compromised too much and have not been progressing far enough, fast enough. so the kind of bernie sanders that comes to washington seeks

we ought to shift all of this out of washington, d.c. [applause] we need to get rid of obama care and replace it with a consumer driven private sector oriented patient centered health care insurance system that will lower costs. that's the second part. the third part is we need civil service reform. there are too many government workers. we can reduce and i promise you we'll reduce the government work force by 10% just by attrition. my plan says if you want to hire someone in a department you have to have three vacancies created. we can shrink the government but we need reform so that they can embrace technology and be rewarded for a job well done but it should not be lifetime employment. that creates huge costs. then finally across the spectrum of government as much as possible beyond medicaid, education programs, the delegated authority to e.p.a., transportation programs. washington is not the place where this should take place. they should be providing this money in bloc grants back to the state. and i trust states. maybe it's because

i went down to washington. to policy gurus, think tanks, newspaper people, anybody i could. pretty much all of them told me two things. first, that is a good idea. that is actually an idea that could make a difference. and the second thing they told me, don't do it. think about that. they gave me 1000 reasons not to do it, but the reasons all boiled down to one very painful point. you can't win. don't do it because you can't win. don't even try because you can't win. you will never get to this consumer agency passed into law. they pointed out that the biggest banks in the country would hate this idea and they would send hundreds of millions of dollars to stop it. and they said to me, you are just a teacher. you've got nothing. you've got no money, organization, political juice. it won't happen, so don't even try. i heard this, but there was something deep inside me that just refused to believe them. they said don't try, and what i heard was try harder. and that is what i did. i jumped in and i fought for that little agency because i truly believed it could make a difference.

people look to washington. and washington is living in a very, very different world. and then on top of all of that is the issue of fairness. is the issue of a rigged economy. which essentially means that ordinary people are working longer hours for low wages. when almost all new wealth and income is going to the top 1%. here is the reality of what goes on which will not -- which will not shock anybody in this world --l street but billions billions of dollars in lobbying and campaign contributions into saying to congress, you have to get rid of these old 1930's regulations. you have to allow commercial banks to merge with investor banks, to merge with large insurance companies. that's the way we can compete, globally. i didn't believe it for one second, not for one second. never made any sense to me. go to my website, you will see the dialogue greenspan and i had. turns out i was right, he was wrong. anyhow, here is the point, billions of dollars going to lobbying. campaign contributions and you , have not just republicans but democrats. let's be frank. greenspan anda

and also nationally there was an nbc washington journal poll that came out yesterday. secretary clinton to future by 10 points, we defeated him by 15 points. and even more importantly than polls is the thrust of our campaign. there is a political fact. the fact is, republicans win national elections when people are demoralized and they don't come out and vote. and last year, republicans won a landslide victory all over this country because 63% of the american people did not vote. 80% of young people did not vote. what is going on in this campaign, the campaign that has the excitement, that has the energy, bringing working people and young people in. campaigns that have spoken to 450,000 people already all over america and has spoken to over 27,000 people in meetings like this, our campaign is the campaign of excitement, energy, momentum and will result in a large voter turnout which means a victory for democrats. [cheers and applause] let me also say this. when we began this campaign, they said we did not have money, organization, name recognition. one of the problems

george washington university, we beat him by 10, she beats or three. fox news has us beating trump by 14. she beats him by seven. she is beaten by seven that she beats him by seven. everyone knows that you win the electoral vote, taking place in 50 states in this country. and if you look at virtually every battleground state in , arizona, in michigan, in missouri, and in many other states which are up for grabs, maybe one by the republican or maybe one by the democratic candidate, in every one of those states, we defeat trump by larger margins that she does. further, equally important, but recent elections tell us is that when the voter turnout is high, when people come out in large numbers, democrats and progressives win. people are excited. they come out. young people come out. working-class people come out. people don't always vote, out. -- people that don't always come out, out. democrats win. on the other hand, republicans win elections when the voter turnout is low. that is exactly what we saw in the last national election of 2014, win 63% of the

they marched on washington. they sat in. and we made huge breakthroughs. but it happened not because of somebody on top. it happened because millions of people essentially said, enough is enough. what about the women's movement? 100, 150 years ago, women said sorry, we are not going to be treated as third-class citizens. we are going to do the work we want to do. [applause] we are going to be able to vote, to run for political office. huge, terrible, enormous struggles. but women as a result of those made enormous progress. the environmental movement didn't happen in washington. by some senator introducing legislation. it happened because people said what is going on on this planet of ours? you can't destroy it. we have to protect the planet. and you think about something like gay rights. if we were sitting here 10 years ago, and somebody said i think in 2015, gay marriage will be legal in 50 states, the person next to him would have said what are you smoking? which raises another issue. [laughter] but the point is, when people at the grassroots start movi

she is in a bilingual program at school and washington, d.c.. it is something i would like to do to improve my spanish. ien i was in middle school, took three years of japanese. i wish every member that. a decent amount of spanish and i can speak some spanish. and i understand it fairly well but i'm not fluent. and so in the whole conversation , it is almost like you are at there is something in between. i am not fluent. do you remember the first time you came to washington, d.c.. ? julian castro: i do. i was between my sophomore and jr. year in stamford. i got a white house internship. in july, 1994 and i flew on southwest airlines into baltimore. i came in and i hopped in a cab this kind of catholic worker house where my mother knew the person who was running it. and i didn't realize how much it cost to take a cab from baltimore, washington into the middle of d.c. and so i had $72 in my pocket. and as i am watching the meter run up, i think it ended up costing $80. i got to my destination and i had to tell the taxi driver, i am so sorry. i onl
