ryan lizza is here to talk about this, he's a washington correspondent for the new yorker magazine. why is this campaign, all of the sudden, it was bad, but now it's really getting ugly. why has it turn odd ugly? >> one there's an assumption that in iowa and new hampshire, voters are gentle in those states, south carolina is used to rough and tumble, but then the second thing is those states usually went over the field a little bit more. it didn't happen. there's not -- we're not down to a two or three person race the way previous open republican fields have been at this point. and there's basically a death match to be the alternative to donald trump. look at all the polling, there's not much in south carolina, he has a third or more of the vote, and then two-thirds of the vote is divided up among the non-trump candidates. and so, if you're a non-trump candidate, you've got to decide, do i go after my closest competitor, whether he's in the establishment or conservative lane like ted cruz or trump himself? you just have the circular firing squad of all the candidates trying to conso

our senior washington correspondent jeff zeleny is joining us from clinton primary headquarters in new hampshire. what kind of results do they say they're realistically expecting tonight? >> reporter: well, wolf, ever since she stepped foot in the state of new hampshire some eight days ago after iowa, they have been lowering expectations every single day. never mind all the history that the clinton campaign, the clinton family has in this state. of course 1992 is a pivotal moment and 2008 was a pivotal moment for her. they are saying they can't win. when you talk to them privately and some of her supporters, they believe she can win. the polls are all over the board. because of the independent voters we've been talking to and about all day long, some who are playing in the republican primary, they simply don't know but this is much closer than the 25 points would suggest. i am told that most sides believe this is within five points or so and that is not a lot of space or so. if they get out their vote which they have been trying to do, it could be much tighter than some of our suggesti

chris christie was frustrated at the republican establishment in washington, d.c. and the deep pocket of donors in new york who did not get behind him and went to marco rubio trying to, what he thought was gaming the same. chris christie joining trump right now is actually not too surprising. i also heard he is not that close to john kasich as much as we've been saying that. it made sense for him to go to donald trump. >> two sitting governors and christie decided to go with the billionaire businessman. ron, was today's endorsement just another hit for the republican establishment as it's called? at some point do they need to accept the idea of trump becoming the nominee? >> i think the republican establishment, they continue to be divided on this question. precisely on the point that chris christie raised. whether donald trump is their strongest candidate in november. donald trump embodies one-half of what's been a republican civil war about how you win back the white house after they've lost the popular vote in five of the past six elections. one school of though

our senior washington correspondent, joe johns, is following the democratic campaign joining us from new hampshire right now. joe, a lot of people say it's all about the expectations game. what's the latest? >> reporter: well, wolf, it was a very, very narrow victory for hillary clinton just a photo finish, but a far cry from the disappointing loss she suffered in the iowa caucuses eight years ago. the bernie sanders campaign was very quick to point out that this victory for the former secretary of state was anything was decisive. >> i am so thrilled that i'm coming to new hampshire after winning iowa. >> reporter: hillary clinton riding high tonight after narrowly edging out bernie sanders by fractions of a percent in the iowa caucuses. >> as i stand here tonight breathing a big sigh of relief, thank you, iowa. >> reporter: the contest was the cosest in iowa democratic caucus history. a race with a margin so razor thin the winner could not be determined until hours ago when the iowa democratic party released final numbers. tonight, when asked if he was prepared to concede the iowa c
